Mums Working from HomeMums working from home can have a hard time finding a business or part-time work that fits around their family that also gives them the lifestyle that they desire. As a stay at home mum (at least part-time for now!), I know the difficulties of juggling everything and keeping everyone happy. You want to stay at home and be there for your children but that leaves an unfulfilled gap somewhere in the equation. Maybe it is that you would like or need to contribute financially to the household? Maybe you just feel that you are not stretching yourself enough and using your brain? As a mum working from home, I know first hand how sometimes being around babies and children all day when you have previously had a successful career can sometimes scramble your brain! If you have read My Story, you will know that I battled to find a solution to being a work at home mum for some time before stumbling across a solution that works for me. If you are anything like the majority of wanna be stay at home mums, you will wonder how on earth you can fit anything in to your life that fits with your children and family. School hours are so short that getting a job that fits around them is near on impossible. If you do find one, there are hundreds of other people in the same situation going after the same job. If you have toddlers or babies at home, finding something that you can break up into manageable chunks to do whilst they do an activity or play by themselves for half an hour is a struggle. Any meaningful work that you can do when they are in bed means driving miles and late nights that leave you drained for the next day's round of school run, cooking, cleaning, shopping, nose wiping, playing hide and seek etc What you need is to find something that doesn't take up lots of room (I had boxes and boxes of children's clothing all over the house when I was trying to make money on ebay - we couldn't move!), can be done any time you choose and that fits around the school run and sick children. And of course, if you are lucky to find it, you need something that doesn't pay peanuts! Oh Boy! That sounds like a hard task.... Fortunately for you, you can learn from the results of my research... As long as you have a computer and internet access, you can turn any passion into a home based business.
Successful Stay at Home Mum SolutionsI have a number of strands to my work from home business, each works in its own way, each means that I can work on my computer at any time of day without having to leave the house unless I want to. I can work in the evening when my son is in bed, or at the weekend when my husband is home. I can also work for periods during the day when my son is around as long as I break it up into chunks and give him the attention he needs too. When he starts school, I will be able to work at home whilst he is at school and be there for him at the end of the day. I don't think I can put a price on being able to do that for him whilst not having to worry about brining in a wage to the household... My business model is about multiple streams of income - each little part bringing in smaller amounts of money over time that all add up to make a sizeable and growing income. You don't have to take the same approach but it does mean that I don't have all my eggs in one basket!
Mums Working from Home WebsitesIf I were starting again, of all the parts of my business, I would choose building a website as my number one priority. This one is still under construction but I have already started building one that links to my husband's business. A word of advice though, this solution is not an overnight, get rich quick scheme and it will be a few months before you start being able to earn an income from a website but don't let that put you off. What we are looking at here is a long-term strategy that will continue to earn you an income throughout the period that you are looking to be a stay at home mum and beyond. Think of it as investing your time now in order to earn in the future. If you do it right, it will be worth it in the long term. Don't panic - you can do this. You don't need any special skills or knowledge. Hundreds of stay at home mums are doing this without any previous knowledge of computers, websites and with no special programming skills. The Work at Home Moms (WAHM) Master's course is a free training resource that shows you how. This course is written by four work at home mums (WAHMS) who show you how you can turn a passion into a website. Don't worry if you don't think you have anything that you could write about, stay at home mums write websites about pregnancy, bringing up babies, nutrition for children, being a work at home mum and any other hobby or past time they have a passion and knowledge for. The course follows the experiences of a number of different mums who have successfully turned a hobby or passion into an income whilst they manage to stay at home with their kids. The course also shows you how to research your options, get organised, start building and ultimately - how to generate an income from your website.
A Day in the Life of a Stay at Home MumI really enjoy watching this video of a day in the life of a stay at home mum. It really sums up what we are all hoping to achieve by
working at home with our children.
Other Stay at Home Mum OptionsAs I said before, I have a few strands contributing to my work at home business which enable me to be a part-time stay at home mum. Virtually all of the options on my page about home business ideas are do-able from home but I favour those that generate long term residual income for work that I have done in the past.
